Publisher's Description:
In 1763 Massachusetts, Susanna Smith has grown up with everything she's ever wanted, except one thing: an education. Because she's a female, higher learning has been closed to her, but her quick mind and quicker tongue never back down from a challenge. She's determined to put her status to good use, reaching out to the poor and deprived. And she knows when she marries well, she will be able to continue her work with the less fortunate.

Ben Ross grew up a farmer's son and has nothing to his name but his Harvard education. A poor country lawyer, he doesn't see how he'll be able to fulfill his promise to make his father proud of him. When family friends introduce him to the Smith family, he's drawn to quick-witted Susanna but knows her family expects her to marry well. When Susanna's decision to help an innocent woman no matter the cost crosses with Ben's growing disillusionment with their British rulers, the two find themselves bound together in what quickly becomes a very dangerous fight for justice.

First book by this author but not last!!!

Susanna Smith is a wealthy young woman who has grown up having everything's she's ever wanted except an education. She is dedicated to her family and the king of England. As a daughter of wealthy parents, they expect her to marry well. As she trying to follow the expectations of her parents and the laws of the land she befriends Ben Ross, an old childhood friend, below her class, who recently returned to town from Harvard. They feel drawn to each other but as a farmer's son, he knows that her family will never approve of him, especially her mother, who doesn't hide her opposition of him. Ben is determined to prove himself to others and gain the status and wealth by proposing to Susanna's rich cousin. But it's hard to court one when all your thoughts are drawn to another. Susanna's life changes forever when she meets a runaway indentured servant in her yard. Susanna always follows the rules. She knows that by helping this girl she will be breaking the law, but as she can't ignore not helping the less fortunate, she can't handle not helping when someone is obviously in need. As Susanna seeks Bens help, who cannot ignore the injustices around him, even if it means putting himself in danger, they both soon find themselves in danger, but she is willing to risk her own safety for the safety of another, and she faces big troubles for herself and for all she loves.
This was a great book. It had enough mystery, romance, drama and even suspence that kept me flipping the pages faster and faster. And I liked that the end was not predictable like most of the books, but it kept me wondering how the story would end until the last few pages. First book by this author but not last. I thank Bethany House for a free copy of this book for my honest review.
